I was out with the girls a few weeks ago and we started talking about our individual areas of weakness. So, I put together scriptures from different parts of the Bible (New Living Translation) that we can read when we are tempted or just need some encouragement to do what is right. Trust me, I cannot live this sucker out, but it is the goal to strive for. Kind of like joining the gym and starting boot camp classes. At first, you can’t finish the classes and soreness takes over. But over time you develop endurance and are just able to do so much better because you are far better trained.
Spiritual Boot Camp Reminder – A Call to Holy Living
So think clearly and exercise self-control. Look forward to the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy – their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols (like wealth). You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. Get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech.
Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Yes, you who trust him [Jesus] recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him…they stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them. But you are not like that, for you are chosen. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you. I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.
In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self control, and self control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins. So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away.
