Election 2012 … My Perspective

Hubby and I have been discussing this for weeks.  So, here it is.  My (Christian) perspective two cents worth regarding the United States Nov 2012 election results.

Have you ever seen the movie Facing the Giants?  Where the coach teaches David about the wide left and the wide right?  Here is the clip: http://youtu.be/qxNgvMwd16I

Well, that is my view of the 2012 presidential election candidates.  We have democrats nominating their most far left member and republicans nominating who they believe to be the most conservative.  And honestly, neither one represents your average American.   They are both ridiculously well off financially and both are exempt from using national healthcare and socialized medicine (or that’s what I’ve heard anyway).   They both have more in common with each other than with my life for sure.  But, welcome to the world of politics and politicians.

If I could be completely honest, in my opinion, neither party or candidate in this election represents the Christian minority of this country either.  Yes, that’s my favorite small interest group.

Many Republicans remind me of Jesus’s references to the Pharisees as found in Luke 18:9-14 which I’ve shortened “Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else.  Two men went into the temple to pray.  The Pharisee prayed ‘I thank you God that I am not a sinner like everyone else’…”  At other times the far right reminds me of those who are lovers of money, greedy, worshiping the creation over the creator and those who walk right on by after seeing the man beaten and laying for dead on the road (Luke 10:30).  And they give really great speeches about morality (ex. being pro life) but when they have a majority in office, they sit by and do little to protect our country from moral decay.  Though the American health care system is completely broken, Republicans failed to address the issue when they had a majority in office to do so.  So, kudos to the democrats for actually “doing something” with their majority though I still maintain that they performed an amputation for a broken system rather than performing the careful surgery that was needed.  But again, that’s politics.

As far as democrats go, especially the extreme far left, we have moral decay and way too many entitlements and severe welfare issues.  I’ve got to give it to Bill Clinton though (he was actually considered a conservative democrat on moral issues).  It was his presidency that signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law though those days are about to come to an end.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_of_Marriage_Act   And he also did an amazing job getting people off of welfare and into the work force.   The Clinton days were those wherein I lived in government housing (aka the projects) but was able to temporarily collect food stamps, Medicaid, a child care assistance grant, and a pell grant to cover my education and daycare expenses so that I could obtain a 2 year degree (in legal assisting) to help move me from the welfare system to the work force.  And that’s what I did.  I’m so thankful that those programs were available.  But I was also under the impression that I had to “use or loose” those benefits.  Currently, there is so much welfare fraud and an entitlement mentality.  The far left also promotes the “if it feels good do it” mentality which is killing Americans little by little and slowly but surely.

As for the results of the election.  My view was this before I ever knew who would win:

“For the Lord’s sake, respect all human authority – whether the king as head of state, or the officials he has appointed.” 1 Peter 2:13-14. “Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.  So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished.” Rom 13:1-2. “Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons.  For government workers need to be paid… Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.” Rom 13:6-7.

Remember, “In the last days there will be very difficult times.  For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful.  They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good.  They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride and love pleasure rather than loving God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could made them godly…”.  2 Tim 3:1-5.  “For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions.  These are not from the Father, but are from this world” 1 John 2:16.

As far as this debate that “America is not a Christian nation”, I say DUH.  America is the largest importer, exporter and producer of pornography in the World.  Prostitution is legal in Nevada (even when America has an all Republican majority….).  Abortion is legal in every state in the US.  Same sex marriage is being legalized in 1/5 of states.  The new love is political correctness and if it feels good do it.  And, at the end of the day, I firmly believe that God is going to give America over to the desires of its heart whether that is greed, lust, pride, etc.  Pick your poison.

But, “Do not throw away your confident trust in the Lord… patient endurance is what you need now so that you will receive all that he has promised.  For in just a little while, the Coming One will come and not delay”.  Hebrews 10:35-37. “The end of the world is coming soon.  Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers.  Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other… cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay.  God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts.  Use them well to serve one another.”  1 Peter 4:7-10.

“You must remain faithful to the things you have been taught… Preach the word of God and Christ Jesus… Patiently correct, rebuke and encourage your people with good teaching.  For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching.  They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear… work at telling others the Good News…” Tim 3 & 4.  “Don’t get involved in foolish arguments that only start fights…. Be patient with difficult people.  Gently instruct those who oppose the truth… then they can escape the devil’s trap.” 2 Tim 2:23-26. “Keep a clear conscience so that those who speak maliciously of you against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander” 1 Peter 3:16. “Love one another and work together with one mind and purpose.  Do nothing through selfish ambition, but esteem others better than yourself looking out for their interest also.”  Phil 2:2-5.  (By the way, these are versus that 9 times out of 10 I fail at doing but that I do meditate on and hope to improve on.)

Remember, Jesus came to save the world not to condemn it.  But first people must realize that they need a savior.  That takes patient endurance and long-suffering.  Be faithful with what YOU have been asked to do and let God be God and handle the rest.  God is working to draw people unto Himself so that as many as possible can come to Him before His return.  Trust His plan.
